PUSAKA is proud to announce a new series of cultural heritage performances, Senjakala: Seni Kita by Pusaka, presented by ART@TRX.
As the first offering of our series, we bring you Gamelan and Joget Gamelan, performed by the accomplished musicians and dancers of Astrawayu.
The Malay Gamelan is a court tradition of Terengganu and Pahang, traditionally performed for royal occasions during the reigns of Sultan Ahmad of Pahang (1882–1914) and Sultan Sulaiman of Terengganu (1920–1942). Its distinct identity took shape through the Johor–Riau–Lingga and Riau–Lingga Sultanates before becoming established in the Malay Peninsula. Built around the slendro pentatonic scale, the ensemble comprises seven instruments: saron besar, saron kecil, gambang, bonang, kenong, a pair of hanging gongs, and a gendang.
The dances performed to Malay Gamelan, known as Joget Gamelan, once numbered 60; only 10 survive today. Performed in exquisite court attire, the dancers move with a refinement and grace that reflects the tradition’s royal origins, each gesture measured and deliberate in the manner of the Malay court.
